Metro and McKinley Honored as National Blue Ribbon Schools

Metro Academic and Classical High School and McKinley Classical Junior Academy were named 2008 No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools by U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings. The award distinguishes schools for helping students achieve at very high levels and for making significant progress in closing the achievement gap. Secretary Spellings recognized only seven schools in Missouri and 320 schools nationwide. Brenda Smith is the principal of McKinley and Dr. Wilfred Moore is the principal of Metro. The No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools. Schools are selected based on one of two criteria: either dramatically improving performance on state tests when at least 40 percent of their students are from disadvantaged backgrounds, or scoring in the top 10 percent on state or national tests regardless of the background of students. Under No Child Left Behind, schools must make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in reading and mathematics. Each state—not the federal government—sets its own academic standards and benchmark goals.
